La Crete Library has been in operation since at least 1962. (Committee minutes are on file at the library dating back to January 30, 1962). We were first housed in a small building across the road from La Crete Public School. Mrs. Martha Nafziger spearheaded the birth of the La Crete Community Library.

When the Public School was completed in 1977, La Crete Community Library became a joint library user with FVSD No.52. After 24 years of residency in the school, during the extensive school renovations the library was temporarily moved. From May 2001 to April 2002, the library was squeezed into a small, cramped portable while waiting for construction to be completed. Then in April of 2002, the library was moved back into the newly renovated school, and once again the La Crete Community Library is sharing it's space with the Public School Library.

Some of Our Programs Include:

  • Senior's Book Mobile - serving seniors and shut-ins by providing them with a variety of reading material as well as craft/special interest magazines etc.
  • Summer Reading Programs: offered during summer months to children, including crafts, readings, videos etc.
  • Senior's Tea - Held in June celebrating Seniors Week. Includes singing, poems, video and slide presentations.
  • Our Short and Long-term Goals include:
  • Add new programs, possibly targeting children and youth.
  • Expand on existing programs, namely the Book Mobile to include more seniors as well as shut-ins and others who may not have easy access to the Library.
  • Provide patrons with a separate stand-alone library facility.

We are open 49 hours per week providing the school and community with library services. We have 1 Librarian, 2 library assistants, 1 student assistant and 1 book mobile staff (this position hours vary depending on demand and needs). Along with our staff we have many volunteers who assist our library.
