Zama City

Community Library

Box 14, Zama City, AB. T0H4E0

683-2888

Our community library was founded in 1974. It was first housed upstairs in the Community Hall, then moved to a room in the School and is currently housed within the Municipal County office building.

We are open to the public 11 hours per week, with additional usage for the school (at the discretion of the principal) as well as we do open additional hours on request for our correspondence students. We have two part-time staff, as well as some dedicated volunteers who assist in putting out books, special projects such as inventory and preparing new material for circulation.

Our local library committee meets once every couple of months. We oversee operation of the library as well as programs and additional funding sources such as fundraising. Our library over the past couple of years has seen some major upgrades. We have been fundraising for the past 8 years to upgrade all shelving in our library and we are very happy to say that this project if 100% complete.

We also sponsor and operate the Zama City Website.  This is 100% Volunteer time to update and control this site.  To find out more about our community please visit www.zamacity.ca

We welcome everyone to stop in while they are in town, we have a little something for everyone!  If we don't have what you are looking for, let us know and we will try our best to get it in for you!

Two of Our Major Goals

  • Continue to add and update our book, video and book on tape collections.
  • Our long-term goal is either to build an addition on to our existing library or look at options for a bigger building. We have done an extensive community needs assessment and feel that this would benefit everyone.  We have been putting what we can into a Capital fund for this endeavour.

We offer free library memberships to all residents, our video memberships do come with a small fee to cover costs. We have three computers as well we have recently added two laptops which all have internet access.  We are now connected to High Speed internet via SuperNet and SIS Canada. We also house 'tourism central' which is updated regularly and promotes local as well as far away tourism hot-spots.

Our programming has seen a decrease over the last couple of years due to funding struggles and volunteer time. Thanks to the Mackenzie County, we have seen an increase in funding and hope to rebuild our programming.  We are currently partnering with the Zama Recreation Society to offer materials for Community Programming.  We have increased service hours due to high demand. Some of the programs we used to operate and our goal is to run them again: reading/discussion groups, kids holiday crafts, story hours and puppet shows, Mom's Tea, and guest readers.
